I’ve been dreaming about being an author/illustrator since third grade when our class had an assignment to write and illustrate a story and have it made into a hard bound book. Yes, I still have that book. Yes, it was about a horse. I loved fairy tales as a child, both the stories and the art. I adored the Chronicles of Narnia series in grade school (especially The Horse and His Boy). I came to romance as a genre late. The first books that helped me see what a powerful tool romance is for healing, learning to step into our own power, and seeing real world challenges in a new light were Evie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes, Love Lettering by Kate Clayborn, and the historical romances of Mimi Matthews, Grace, Burrowes, and Mary Balough. I feel the Howl’s Moving Castle movie is gorgeous, but it’s the book that’s an underrated girl power classic. Everything I do is somehow wrapped up in storytelling. My day job is non profit communications and media relations. My husband and I bonded over the power of a well told story to open hearts and change minds.

Stay a Spell Book Cover

When my almost boyfriend “friend zones” me and cancels our date four days before the big ‘Summer of Love’ fundraiser I decide to try something new. To help heal my broken heart and get in a better headspace for the meeting with my big coloring book publisher tomorrow, I cast my very first spell of intention.

Unfortunately, it backfires. Now I have no date, I’m fired from my own project, and my beloved late Uncle Theo is suddenly talking to me in my head. I have no idea if he’s real, or I’m going crazy.

Worse yet, my too-handsome-for-his-own-good, famous, former summertime bestie just showed up next door for the summer. I’m still furious with Rune for ghosting me a decade ago. Now he’s using his old nicknames for me and acting like no time has passed.

But maybe Theo’s right. Maybe bribing Rune to be my fake date Saturday night is the win/win solution I need. I just won’t think about how my two best and worst dates ever were with Rune, even though technically they weren’t dates.

Crave character driven, sexy, slow burn, atmospheric, small town, witty bantered,
